What is Routes to Art?

Routes to Art, this year on May 22-23, is a self-guided open studio tour and winner of the 2009 Tourism of Excellence Award in Cultural Heritage from the New York State Travel & Vacation Association! Now in its third year, Routes to Art has again partnered with the Seneca Nation of Indians. The resulting 2010 tour features 43 artists, 17 of whom are Native American artists. In order to build anticipation for the event, an exhibition of representative works by each participating artist will be hosted at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University from April 24 through May 16. The public is welcome at the opening reception on April 24 from 5-7pm. Routes to Art is produced by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council, a 501c3 non-profit arts organization serving all of the Cattaraugus region. Request your 2010 Routes to Art brochure today!

What will I see on Routes to Art?

Routes to Art showcases 43 artists and artisans working in a wide range of media including painting, photography, jewelry, sculpture, fiber arts, woodcarving, ceramics, beading, pottery, and more. During Routes to Art weekend, the artists are available to answer questions and demonstrate how they create their work. Visitor will meet the artists in person, see live demonstrations of their craft, and have a chance to purchase works directly from the people that create them! You may enter a studio and find a watercolorist demonstrating a technique, watch a woodworker turning a bowl, or see a ceramic artist working with clay. This is a chance to see more of an artist’s work than you would at a typical venue.

What do I need to do to attend Routes to Art?
Unlike most art tours, Routes to Art is free! Visitors plan their own agenda, tour the area, and visit the artists' viewing locations during the prescribed hours of the show, 10am-5pm, Saturday and Sunday, May 22-23, 2010. Participating artists will be present at their locations both days of the event.

All you need is the 2010 RTA brochure which includes a list of participating artists, examples of their work, and maps to the locations of artists’ studios, galleries, and other viewing locations. Review your brochure to help you select the artists you would like to meet, note their studio numbers, and then locate the artists on the enclosed maps. To view more examples of artwork, and enhanced listings, see the artist directory on this website.
